To motivate people across the country and celebrate the benefits of being active during the pandemic, staying fit, and inspiring individuals to take charge of their health, Mumbai Hospital recently celebrated National Fitness Day.
The hospital hosted fitness and hashtag challenges that included planks, squats, push-ups, lunges, jumping jacks, to encourage people to exercise, followed by a prize giving session. .
About 140 people participated in the various events, including uploading a 30-second exercise video and nominating others to exercise as well.
The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and fitness.

How to start a health and fitness journey at an old age? Rather than focusing on goals that seem unattainable or untenable to you, you are better off focusing on lifestyle activities that will keep you active and exploring – and having fun.

Connie Smith, director of healthy lifestyles at Florida’s First Coast YMCA, says to try something new.

“Try something different that you’ve never done before, each month, and it will keep you going,” says Smith.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Heart Association recommend that adults of all ages get 150 minutes of exercise per week (1, 2).

But don’t let the large numbers overwhelm you before you start. If you start small and find out what you like, you’ll find that there is an exercise for you that doesn’t even sound like an exercise.

Here are some ideas to get you started.

Don’t be intimidated into shedding some weight. Strength training, strength training, or resistance training – however you want to refer to it – are essential for optimal health.

Smith said she recommends yoga for people in their 50s and 60s who are struggling to reset their lives.

“You can start with chair yoga if you don’t want to get on the floor,” she said. Whichever way you feel most comfortable getting started, give it a try. Smith added, “Yoga gives you that mental balance that comes with some of the things that happen in life… yoga has a lot to do with giving back to yourself.

Running is one of those exercises that you love or hate. However, for those who love it, there is no reason to stop as they get older. While running doesn’t have a low impact and can stress the knees and other joints, Solomon said you might want to switch to a treadmill to reduce the impact.

But if you like the mental clarity you gain from being outdoors and exercising in the great outdoors, hiking may be better for you.

Mänttäri is a Finnish social media influencer who talks about the shame of fat and body positivity. She is overweight but doesn’t let that interfere with the joy of exercise. While practicing dance as a hobby, however, she encountered several obstacles related to her weight.

Even sports professionals don’t always know how to guide a taller person, even as more and more people of working age are overweight.

Mänttäri’s experiences are not unique to him. Society is still rife with the shame of fat, which persuades taller people to stay away from gyms and swimming pools.

Mänttäri explains the insidious nature of the comment: In the gym, for example, it would be inappropriate to go upstairs to congratulate someone who was in good shape, telling them that it is good that she feels included. Why would the opposite be acceptable?

According to Mänttäri, weight does not prevent movement, as long as everyone is allowed to train according to the capabilities of their own body.

“These areas primarily approach the obese body as something to be repaired or even erased. Obesity is like an in-between space that people have to constantly strive to get out of. Instead, it might be interesting to consider how one obese person could be healthier without the need to constantly lose weight, ”says Harjunen.

According to international studies, exercise instructors have the most negative attitudes towards obese people, although they should be the ones who create a safe space for exercise.

For most fitness instructors, exercise has always been easy and fun and an important part of life. They may have difficulty understanding people with negative thoughts and experiences associated with exercise.

“It doesn’t have to be conscious ill will. In fact, many want everyone to be able to come and move. But as long as nothing is done about these attitudes, or the problem is not even identified. , the end result is the opposite, ”says Harjunen.

Dance classes for the obese remind us the world is not perfect

Mänttäri is now leading the XXL dance class, aimed at women with a body mass index over 30. The aim of the class is to create a safe space where no one has to fear being ridiculed or scrutinized.

A song sounds through the speakers. In the ballroom, people pose to the beat of the music. The atmosphere is relaxed and the dancers move around the room with red cheeks.

The instructor is not talking about burning calories but talking about the joy of exercising. Everyone has their own reason for coming to class. And under no circumstances is anyone allowed to comment on someone else’s appearance.

Classes for overweight people are a lifeline for many. At the same time, they are a reminder that the world is not perfect.

Some companies have realized that there are a lot of taller people who want to exercise. More and more sportswear are available in plus sizes. Yet no relief can be expected from the market economy.

Many activists are spreading the message of body positivity, but obesity is still not considered acceptable. Fat shaming is so deeply ingrained in our culture that we must fight it with force, says Harjunen.

According to Harjunen, more talk is needed on food culture and more training needed in the areas of fitness and health. The media should also review the content in a more self-critical way.

“We have TV genres that turn obese people into a spectacle. A transformation into something different is considered entertainment,” Harjunen says.

Mänttäri also hopes that sports clubs and coaches will be involved in the change. They should ensure that people of all sizes have the same opportunity to grow in the sport, and that these people have visibility.

“I wouldn’t want to separate overweight clients from others. I wish everyone were in every dance class. Those kind of people would be nice,” she says.

Muhammad sat down with the kids after training and answered all of their questions regarding CrossFit, fitness, nutrition, health, wellness and life. Muhammad’s goal with this visit to the Goodman Community Center as he prepared for the National CrossFit Games in Madison matches one of his main goals in life – to involve children of color in health, fitness. and focus on their well-being and helping to diversify the CrossFit world he loves so much.

Muhammad grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from Tennessee University of Technology in 2010. He currently lives in Ankeny, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines, with his wife and four children. Muhammad has been practicing CrossFit intensively for 11 years now.

“I started with CrossFit because my strength and conditioning trainer at Tennessee Tech University wanted to hire me as a strength trainer,” he recalls. “In order to be a strength trainer, he wanted me to participate in CrossFit on his team. He thought I would be good… I had just graduated from college and was playing basketball.

A little over a decade later, CrossFit has become a passion in his life. Muhammad says he would like to see CrossFit, often considered a white sport and featuring white athletes, become more diverse.

“We are working on its diversification. I feel like we are going in the right direction, ”he said. “I have the impression that people are aware of [the lack of diversity]. My nonprofit, Project Onyx, is ahead of diversifying this space. We have 15 children coming this weekend [to National Crossfit games in Madison] it will be here. Two are level one certified.

“We just want them to have access to CrossFit and fitness in general, and teach them about the sport and the by-products of what CrossFit is and what it actually does in our lives,” said declared Muhammad. “We made it our mission to close the health disparity gap. “The National Security Council (NSC) has met to consider the appeal of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to review the decision on sports and recreational SOPs at the MCO May 7-20,” a- he said in a statement yesterday.

Initially, all sporting and recreational activities in areas affected by MCO were not permitted for the next two weeks.

Other aspects for the sports and leisure sectors will be refined at the next CNS technical meeting.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, expressed his gratitude to the members of the NSC, in particular the Prime Minister, who had taken into account the proposal of the ministry.

He also called on fans and sports enthusiasts to continue fitness activities during the MCO period, for the sake of safety.

“We have not yet won the fight against Covid-19, and all parties should play a more effective role in order for the MCO application to achieve its goal this time around,” he said.

The government placed Kuala Lumpur and several towns in Johor, Perak and Terengganu under MCO from May 7 to 20, following the same order over six districts of Selangor from May 6 to 17.

The final decision, made later that same day, allowed non-contact sports and recreational activities like jogging, cycling and exercise to be conducted in open areas, subject to SOPs.

Lisa Chang on Facebook said the standard operating procedure should be similar to what it was during MCO 2.0 to avoid confusing the public.

“Why is it necessary to change here and there, just follow the previous SOP.

Steward Saw also said the changes to the SOPs would not only confuse the public but also law enforcement officials.

Facebook user Anis Hashim pointed out that the NSC’s SOP had no restrictions on non-contact outdoor sports as of Thursday.

The public also hopes that the government will allow the opening of swimming pools and gymnasiums.
