“Serious athletes and weekend warriors often underestimate the seriousness of a sprain, and they rush into action without taking the time to properly rehabilitate the injury,” says Michael J. Cornelison, DPM, FACFAS , foot and ankle surgeon and president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “While no one likes to be left out of the physical activities they enjoy, early diagnosis and treatment of an ankle injury speeds the healing process. It also reduces the chances of chronic ankle pain in the long term.

To help people properly manage this painful injury, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons shares some important information and facts:

What is an ankle sprain? An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments, usually on the outside of the ankle. The severity depends on whether the ligament is stretched, partially torn, or completely torn, as well as the number of ligaments involved. Ankle sprains are not the same as strains, which affect muscles rather than ligaments.

Americans have no shortage of exercise options to get in shape, gain muscle mass, lose weight, or learn how to protect themselves. Unfortunately, those who train can be victims of harassment and abuse.

To determine the most toxic exercise communities, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the report The most negative fitness communities from fitness review site FitRated. The report analyzed more than 2 million comments posted on 16 different Reddit communities centered on certain fitness disciplines in 2021 and surveyed 1,000 active respondents who said they exercised at least once a week. Exercise communities were ranked based on the percentage of reviews with negative sentiment.

According to the FitRated report, on the 16 different Reddit communities on the list, martial arts is the community with the highest percentage of posts with negative sentiment at over 66%. Next comes powerlifting with 63% negative posts and bodybuilding at 61%. (Find out how long you need to exercise to burn calories from your favorite foods.)

About one in 40 posts/comments on online fitness forums contain profanity. The exercise community with the highest percentage of posts containing profanity is bodybuilding (5.8%), followed by martial arts (4.0%) and bodybuilding (3.9%).

In addition to toxic behaviors online, some of the abuse takes place in the exercise area, with 54% of respondents saying they were harassed at least quite often while exercising. Martial arts respondents cited the most harassment, at over 79%. Crossfit and powerlifting followed with more than 78%. (These are the laziest states in America.)

According to the FitRated report, the majority of men and women said they had been stalked by people of the same sex. However, women were more than three times more likely than men to have been bullied by other genders. Women were also more likely to say the harassment had a negative impact on their exercise routine and to have stronger feelings about a supportive fitness community.

Disciplines such as pilates, yoga, and flexibility that emphasize a positive mindset and seek to relieve stress scored lower among the most toxic exercise communities.

How about choosing a sport instead? Not on a professional level, but as a hobby. Physical recreation is a great way to train the whole body and promote good health. These activities help to stimulate you physically and mentally by stretching and toning muscles, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, burning fat, balancing blood sugar and reducing stress.

But I am not a professional, so here is the opinion of a true professional:

Although yes, there are few places in India where you can indulge in the act, if you are privileged enough to live close to them, why not give surfing a shot? The sport’s innate “coolness” may intimidate many, but don’t knock it out until you’ve tried it. Not only does it promote overall cardiovascular fitness through paddling, but it also boosts your leg and core strength once you’re standing on the board.

2. Kickboxing

The violent reputation the sport has acquired might make some wary of it. But make no mistake about it, aside from the obvious high-intensity cardio and overall strength buildup, kickboxing also promotes an adrenaline rush in your body that improves your instincts, coordination, and fighting spirit.

3. Calithenics

I get it, people stealing from the bar looking like Superman might sound scary. You might think “Woah, I could never do that!” But this is not true. You have no idea what your body is capable of! All you have to do is put in the effort and dedication and you’d be surprised at what you can accomplish.

4. Run

Running is good cardio, everyone knows that. But apart from that, it can also improve your mental health! Running outdoors helps improve memory and adaptability. It can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, reduce stress, and help calm anxiety.

5. Bodyweight training

No, you don’t need a gym or fancy equipment to do strength training. This lesson was best taught to us unanimously during the COVID lockdown. Lifting your body weight is just as productive and has the same effect on your muscles as lifting in the gym. On the contrary, it is more versatile as it gives you extra flexibility to train anytime, anywhere.

It’s not me who hates the gym, I just accept that it’s not for everyone. And it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to enjoy your workouts because the magic sauce for peak fitness is, you guessed it, consistency!

Wilfrid Laurier University helps organize fitness programs for newcomer Canadian women and their children.

The project, called ACTIVEIntegration: Social Integration Through Physical Activity, will provide participants with a place to socialize while staying physically active and learning basic fitness routines.

Activities are scheduled to begin March 8 and 10 at the Victoria Hills and Chandler Mowat Community Centers, with space provided by the City of Kitchener.

ACTIVEIntegration was first suggested by Laurier’s Group Dynamics and Physical Activity Lab as a way to help the community and learn more about the role of physical activity in socialization.

The project is supported by non-profit organizations Focus for Ethnic Women and the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre, as well as Laurier and Laurentian universities.

The project is also supported by the Sunlife Financial Center for Physically Active Communities (CPAC) in Laurier and the Region of Waterloo Public Health Unit.

A pilot version of the program ran late last year, with exercises led by a fourth-year Laurier student.

Nicole Vandermade, program coordinator for CPAC, said the project was for those who might not have many opportunities to stay active.

“That’s what we’re focused on at CPAC, identifying pockets of people who don’t have access to physical activity or wellness programs because of the barriers they may face, whether they’re financial, transportation or language,” she said.

“All of our programming is free, so we try to be that link in the community.”

Activities will focus on barrier-free bodyweight exercises, ranging from yoga to step classes to circuit training, among others.

“[The programs are] really a judgment-free zone where everyone can move at their own pace and do different levels and different variations of exercises based on their comfort level,” Vandermade said.

Vandermade said last year’s pilot program was encouraging, as participants were able to bond in the community and learn more about Canadian customs.

One anecdote she told was that parents were excited to learn the rules of popular sports in Canada because they could share this with their children and play together.

In addition to ACTIVEIntegration, Laurier’s Group Dynamics and Physical Activity Laboratory studies a wide variety of topics related to fitness and socialization.

These include role acceptance in sports, cultural diversity in sports teams, and parent group in youth sports.

Mark Erys, lab manager and one of the project coordinators, outlined the expected social benefits of ACTIVEIntegration.

“We have a partnership grant that is aimed at creating these physical activity opportunities for women who are new to Canada, and we try to do this in a group format so that they have the opportunity to interact with others, to meet new people, to have those opportunities that they might not have otherwise.
