During exercise, our body needs extra energy. But how much more? Well, the answer depends on the type of activity, intensity, duration and frequency of training. Dr. Kiran Rukadikar, bariatric physician and obesity consultant, celebrity nutritionist and founder of the Diet Queen app, says, “Almost all professional athletes, regardless of their sport, train for at least 6-8 hours a day. It’s huge in terms of energy expenditure, loss of water and electrolytes, and wear and tear. Fueling up by eating the right foods and fluids, in the right amounts, at the right times is important when exercising, even if it’s just for an hour.

When it comes to your training, you can set your own schedule based on your training and other activities, but remember: better fuel, better performance. “The best and most adequate foods and fluids should be consumed before, during and after exercise to help maintain blood glucose concentration during exercise, maximize physical performance and improve recovery time” , adds Dr. Kiran.

Before exercise

“Not refueling before exercising is not good for you because you will not have enough energy to maximize your workout. Also, the risks of losing protein and muscle mass are very high if you don’t eat right before training,” Dr. Kiran shares.

Solution: Ideally, refuel two hours before exercising in the following way.

  • To drink a lot of water.
  • Eat healthy carbohydrates such as whole grains (wheat, rice, jowar, bajra), whole wheat toast, low-fat or fat-free yogurt, whole-grain pasta or noodles, brown rice, fruits and vegetables. You can add low-fat or skimmed milk to each of these preparations.
  • Don’t eat fatty, high-protein meals because these foods are digested more slowly in your stomach and take away oxygen and blood that provides energy to your muscles.
  • Always keep a banana for instant energy. Just before activity, say 5-10 minutes before exercising, eat the banana. Easily digestible carbs give you instant energy and won’t make you feel sluggish.

Explaining the reason for refueling during training, Dr. Kiran says: “Our muscle and liver glycogen stores are very low. You need to provide instant energy during the actual workout. There is also a huge loss of fluid which can cause dehydration.

Solution: Whether you’re a professional athlete who trains for several hours or have a light to moderate routine, keep your body hydrated with frequent sips of electrolyte-infused water. “You don’t have to eat during a workout of an hour or less. But for longer, high-intensity vigorous workouts, eating every half hour is recommended. Carbohydrates such as raisins, bananas, or nutrition bars are the best options,” suggests Dr. Kiran.

After exercise

“You need to recharge all the lost energy and increase your strength and muscle mass after exercise,” says Dr. Kiran.

The solution:

  • Fill up on fluids. Drink water, of course, but plain water mixed with natural juices like lemon or orange will also provide carbs. Even coconut water is a good option once in a while.
  • During exercise, you use up a lot of carbohydrates, the main fuel for your muscles. Within half an hour of your exercise, eat appropriate foods containing carbohydrates and protein. Your muscles can store carbs and protein for energy and to help with recovery.

  • Eat protein-rich foods like legumes, dairy products, and dried fruits to help repair and build muscle.
  • If you are not overweight, you can eat fat in moderation. Switch to healthy fats and eat with carbohydrates and protein.

Note that everyone is different and a lot depends on the type of workout you do. So do what’s best for you and care about what you eat, because it’s as important as what you do in training!

Virtual reality fitness is booming relative to the growth of the virtual reality market as a whole. FitXR CEO Sam Cole thinks AI and better tracking will soon make VR fitness training more effective.

For FitXR CEO Sam Cole, virtual training is just getting started and will soon become even more efficient with the integration of wearables, artificial intelligence and new VR headsets.

Sports halls have exploded enormously in the last twenty years. Then came the pandemic that caused millions to cancel their fitness memberships. Lockdowns and work-from-home jobs have changed daily routines, and VR fitness apps have exploded.

VR fitness benefits from changing habits

“Historically, you would have your home, your office and your gym. The degree of separation you got between these different physical environments was often very important to people,” says Cole. “I think with the pandemic, people started merging home and work, and then people started merging home, work, and the gym as well.”

VR gaming becomes a virtual gym

In 2020, BoxVR received a major upgrade and moved from VR gaming to VR gym. The development team completely revamped the app, introducing live fitness workouts with other users, personal trainer avatars, and additional workout types like dance and HIIT.

The innovations were initially not well received and FitXR was punished by users with negative reviews. However, the reason was not the technical implementation. BoxVR and its DLCs can be purchased for a one-time fee. Along with the upgrade to FitXR also came the switch to a subscription model and a monthly cost of $9.99. The VR game BoxVR, on the other hand, disappeared from Meta Quest 2.

The initial rejection subsided over time and FitXR became more and more successful. With regular updates, new content and events, and ever-improving accessibility, a dedicated and enthusiastic community has formed around FitXR.

Virtual reality classes could be taught by live instructors in the future

The team of personal trainers is also constantly growing. Zion Clark, a professional wrestler born without legs, offers workouts for people with physical disabilities. FitXR was able to enroll professional boxer and Olympic gold medalist Nicola Adams.

VR classes may be hosted live by instructors in the future. In the near future, instructors may even be present in person at the VR studio. According to Cole, tests are already underway to have the workout classes delivered live. “We have the technology to support that, we just need to come up with a comprehensive go-to-market strategy to know when it makes sense to launch something like this.”

FitXR: training feedback with artificial intelligence

Still, Cole sees more potential in recorded courses. These would become more effective with the improved motion capture of upcoming VR headsets and the use of artificial intelligence. In the future, FitXR should be able to provide fitness insights based on player movements.

“It’s starting to blur the lines between it’s an avatar talking to me and it’s all pre-recorded, but it gives me specific prompts depending on how I’m playing. It’s more like live feedback,” says Cole .

AI systems are “getting better every day”, according to Cole. Additionally, new headsets with additional tracking cameras should bring better arm and lower torso tracking. “Soon you’ll have nearly complete body position data from helmets,” says Cole.

The FitXR experience will be enhanced by AR, mobile app and wearable devices

FitXR has just released a companion app for iOS and Android that lets users track their progress, create workout plans, or set fitness goals on their smartphones. For the CEO of FitXR, this is an important step into the future.

“We see ourselves as focused on everything from virtual reality to augmented reality, [and] mobile opens up exciting augmented reality opportunities,” says Cole.

FitXR has gained many new customers through word of mouth, he says. The CEO believes this is due to the experiential nature of the VR app. With the smartphone, he says the experience can be extended. FitXR is also working with Apple and Strava on wearable device integration.

THIS week’s edition is all about volume, effectiveness and efficiency in a limited time given to individuals to train or practice while maintaining peak performance.

“Constant, regular training is essential,” says National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer Jerry Diaz.

“But sometimes we only have a small window of time to balance work and family,” he added.

“When an individual has limited time to train while balancing work, I will schedule at least 20-30 minutes of training while always targeting volume, effectiveness and efficiency,” said Diaz.

For volume, he recommends at least one or two basic dynamic movements for the lower body (legs), upper body (chest), back and shoulders.

Another approach is to target specific parts of the body with interval training or squat-focused exercises.

Diaz said some people enjoy fast conditioning movements similar to high-intensity interval training or Tabata.

But an individual should avoid a long list of exercises to avoid frustration, he added.

Effective training involves planning and designating time for each day throughout the week to perform specific exercises, Diaz said.

To ensure effectiveness, he added, individuals must focus on quality movement to avoid injury while increasing intensity with appropriate resistance and challenge.

Over time, the individual’s body will adapt to the exercises, Diaz said. This will require adjustments to avoid the plateau and to continually maintain the challenge with resistance and different movements, he added.

“It’s important to realize that the fitness goal should focus on quality movement, adequate rest time before moving on to each exercise, and maintaining sufficient challenge to keep the routine fun and the individual remains interested in following the program.”

With boss Shota Arveladze failing to select Cannon once after his appointment in January this year, there has also been much talk about the players’ imminent future here in East Yorkshire. The midfielder still has one year left on his remaining contract at the club.
