KARACHI: Over the years, Pakistani sports authorities have largely ignored one of the vital aspects needed to turn talented youngsters into world-class athletes: fitness.

While the sports world has seen a fitness revolution over the past three decades, Pakistan has been left behind with most of its sportspeople still deprived of modern equipment and training.

And it shows in their performance.

Pakistan’s last Olympic medal — a bronze medal in hockey — dates back to 1992 in Barcelona. Their medal tally in other international events like the Asian Games has also dropped. Even in sports like squash and hockey, in which Pakistan were undisputed world champions, there has been a complete decline.

Experts believe that one of the reasons for Pakistan’s sporting downfall is that the country’s athletes lag far behind their counterparts from major sporting nations due to the lack of proper facilities.

But in a very positive development, things are expected to change for the better for domestic athletes in the near future.

A senior national sports official told ‘The News’ in an exclusive interview that efforts are being made to bring about a step change in physical training infrastructure for elite national athletes with a series of milestones which include the establishment of a state-of-the-art biomechanics laboratory and a world-class high altitude physical training facility.

Col. Asif Zaman, Chief Executive of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), said it is high time that steps were taken to bring national athletes up to par with world-class sportsmen by improving their physical condition.

“It is clear that our athletes need to improve their physical condition and that can only be done with the help of proper equipment and training,” he said.

“We have been working on this aspect and are close to achieving key objectives,” he added.

Colonel Asif, a former junior squash champion and younger brother of Pakistani squash legend Qamar Zaman, says the biggest development in terms of building fitness infrastructure will come in the form of a world-class biomechanics lab. order.

“You can’t have world-class athletes without a biomechanics lab,” he said.

According to Col Asif, the lab will be established at the PSP Sports Complex by the end of this year.

The biomechanics lab will be created with the help of Qatar’s renowned Aspire Academy.

“We bought the best equipment to set up the lab. We are going to call on experts to equip the laboratory and train our staff in its operation. »

Col Asif said the lab will cater to national athletes in a variety of sports, helping them improve their fitness and perhaps more importantly avoid injury.

The history of Pakistani sport is littered with serious but preventable injuries to its top athletes who ended their careers prematurely. Eight-time Open world champion Jansher Khan had his career cut short due to a knee injury at 29. The injury ended his reign as world No. 1 for a record ten years.

“At the time, I had no knowledge of ways to prevent such injuries,” Jansher told ‘The News’. “It’s the same again today for our athletes, which is very unfortunate,” he added.

Currently, one of the leading athletes in the country facing fitness issues is star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem. Pakistan’s top medal hope for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Arshad is suffering from an elbow problem and could be forced to undergo surgery.

“A lot of injuries can be prevented with the help of biomechanics,” said Col Asif.

Techniques such as mathematical modeling, computer simulations, and measurements are used in biomechanics to improve performance and reduce injury. It also helps identify optimal movement patterns to improve sport-specific techniques.

At present, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) operates the only biomechanics laboratory in the country.

PSB’s next big goal is to establish a high altitude fitness center for the country’s elite athletes at Skardu, located at an altitude of almost 2500 meters.

“We have acquired suitable land to establish a full-fledged training center in Skardu for top national athletes as well as juniors,” Col Asif said.

“Efforts are underway to establish a world-class physical training center in Skardu. We can hold camps there throughout the year for athletes from different disciplines,” he added.

Col. Asif said the PSB has also requested the Pakistan Army to set up a national fitness academy at the Pakistan military academy in Abbottabad.

“We have talked about the possibility of having a fully-fledged National Fitness Academy in Abbottabad. The Pakistan Army has extensive facilities and experienced trainers and we believe that national athletes can fully benefit from this.

Over the years, various national sportsmen including cricketers, hockey players and athletes have attended training camps with army coaches in Abbottabad. Col Asif now hopes the Academy will be transformed into a full-time physical training center for national athletes.

“Everyone talks about our athletes’ inability to win medals in events like the Olympics,” he said. “We should instead make more and more effort to provide our athletes with the facilities and training they so badly need. Once that happens, I’m sure we’ll start winning medals.

Trevor Anderson calls it a “lightbulb” moment for Jordan Spieth.

Anderson, a performance trainer with 27 years of experience, was guiding the three-time major winner through a series of exercises for a photo shoot in 2014 when he saw something click.

The pair used a TRX “rip trainer” – a resistance cord and weighted bar designed to mimic the action of a Golf to balance.

“He said, ‘Oh, I love how it feels,'” Anderson recalled. “There are photos and footage from that shoot and you can see him in that great position.”

Anderson has been coaching amateur and professional golfers since 2004, and in that time has seen how physical conditioning can help refine a player’s game – even if it means tweaking a big winner’s swing with a unique tip.

“For elite players, it’s always about that little nugget, that little feeling, that little thing that they’re able to put together,” Anderson said. CNN Sports.

“When you start being able to harness the athleticism you already have and use it to your advantage on the golf course…you get consistent results.”

Anderson coaches athletes in a range of disciplines, including football, baseball and general fitness, but it’s in golf where he’s seen the biggest mindset shift toward conditioning.

On today’s PGA Tour, the majority of players are lean, muscular and athletic – equally at home in the gym as they are on the golf course.

“I think I’ve learned to love it (the gym),” world number 7 Rory McIlroy said in an interview with Mag Trainer. “You start out and you hate it, you’re like, ‘Do I have to do this?’ But once you start seeing results and you start getting stronger…I think that’s where the fun comes from.

The same attitude can be found in women’s football. LPGA Tour star Lexi Thompson told CNN in 2017 that she’s “addicted” to training, which she says has created “dramatic changes in my golf swing distance.”

Anderson, who calls himself a “complete nerd” when it comes to the biomechanics of the golf swing, has watched firsthand how fitness has become a crucial part of the modern game.

“Twenty years ago, a meat trainer like me trying to talk about the golf swing was taboo,” he says, adding that fitness was previously considered “no big deal – a guy could have a dad body or a little belly.”

Today, however, he finds himself working closely with golfers to improve the physical aspects of their games: stability, mobility, coordination, speed and explosiveness.

“The golf swing is one of the most violent athletic movements in the world of sports…stay put and move as fast as you can,” says Anderson.

Rather than helping players get stronger, Anderson emphasizes durability and withstanding the rigors of swinging a golf club over and over again.

To do this, he uses exercises like TRX – a suspension training tool that uses your body weight to build core strength, balance and stability – squat and lunge routines, a series of planks, deadlift reps and sets of sprints and jumps.

Anderson also considers a varied athletic course to be an advantage for golfers.

He cites the likes of 2019 US Open champion and former college basketball player Gary Woodland, two-time major winner Dustin Johnson — “he could dive a basketball right now,” Anderson says — and the winner of the 2017 Masters and passionate footballer Sergio Garcia.

“What I’ve found is that competitors on the golf course have a competitive advantage if they’re playing team sports or individual sports that require all of those aspects of athleticism, speed, agility, reaction”, continued Anderson.

“Different types of pressure situations that you encounter in sport in general… It’s the vein that runs through all of these sports all over the world and from a competitive point of view you can really exploit them on the field of golf.”

The relationship between golf and physical training is not a phenomenon unique to the last two or three decades. Gary Player, a nine-time major winner who still trains regularly well into his 80s, has often touted the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

But it’s Tiger Woods who is often credited with revolutionizing the sport’s attitude towards the gym.

The 24-year-old Woods said his daily routine would include a four-mile run, weightlifting practice, several hours of hitting balls and practice, another four-mile run and then an evening of basketball. or tennis if he wanted to.

“The work he did is what made him a great player,” Anderson said.

That means he will miss the upcoming PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where new Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, world No. 2 Jon Rahm and four-time major winner McIlroy will be among the favorites.

As for Spieth, with whom Anderson has worked on several occasions through a joint sponsor, the American could join an elite circle by achieving a career grand slam at the PGA Championship.

He will no doubt be hoping for another moment of enlightenment as he tries to win his first major title in five years.

Fitness experts tell TNM about celebrity-inspired diets and workouts, while adding that there’s more health and fitness awareness in the film industry than ever before.

Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran is in the midst of intense physical and mental training, preparing for his role in the highly anticipated upcoming film Aadujeevitham. Just like videos of risky stunts that come with statutory warnings, Prithviraj physical training is also only possible under expert supervision. The actor’s celebrity trainer and fitness expert, Ajith, told TNM that the diet has been physically and mentally taxing on the actor.

“We had developed a diet plan in which his caloric intake was reduced gradually over several weeks. Physical training centered around strength training, proper nutrition and supplements,” he says.

Ajith also adds that since the Aadujeevitham Filming took place in remote locations in Jordan, Algeria and is currently taking place in the Sahara Desert, the crew had to make do with the resources they had in terms of equipment and space to practice . “Previously, we had to train for almost 30 days in a very basic setup in Gokarna. Similarly, training while touring other countries was not easy. But Prithviraj sir was determined,” shares Ajith.

Like Prithviraj, several actors including Ram Charan (RRR)Silambarasan (Vendhu Thaninthathu Kaadu), Jr NTR (RRR), Anouchka Shetty (Size zero, Baahubali), Rajisha Vijayan (June), Ariya (Sarpatta Parambarai) and Bhumi Pednekar (Dum Laga ke Haisha) underwent a physical transformation in order to prepare for a role. But with the ever-changing dialogue around fitness and wellness, one wonders if the methods celebrities are using to look the part are sustainable and healthy.

Fitness and Durability

Malayalam actress Fara Shibla gained almost 20kg in three to four months as she prepared for her role in Kakshi: Amminipilla. She plays the protagonist Kanthi, who is disliked by the man she just married, because of his weight and also because he was forced into marriage.

Speaking to TNM, Fara explains that she didn’t diet while gaining weight for her role. “I ate chocolate bars and desserts to gain weight. She goes on to say that while losing weight was an organic process, gaining weight involved unhealthy eating, which impacted her health. “I had hormonal issues and developed pigmentation during filming,” she says.

Given that the process satisfied her as an actress, Fara shares that if another physically demanding role came her way, she wouldn’t mind going on a diet that could negatively impact her health. “Production houses are not always equipped with the resources to do this in a sustainable way when deadlines are tight. Also, even in personal life, fitness is a journey with ups and downs,” says Fara.

She adds, “It’s very hard to find good roles because we keep getting typecast once we’ve done a certain type of role. If I hear a good script about a plus-size woman that stands out from the other stories we’ve seen on screen, I’ll be happy to pick it up,” she says.

It’s ironic that even when movies are funded by bigger production houses who appoint teams of fitness experts – including doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists and others – to help actors through the process, headliners rarely get the chance to say no to unrealistic goals. Kiran Dembla, 45, a celebrity bodybuilding champion and fitness trainer who has trained actors like Tamannaah Bhatia, Anushka Shetty and Ram Charan, among others, told TNM that actors might try to achieve their fitness goals in the time limit. fixed by the directors instead of passing up the opportunity to act in a certain film.
