Former wrestler Sushil Kumar offers to provide wrestling and fitness training to prisoners at Tihar prison – The UBJ – United Business Journal
Two-time Olympic gold medalist, wrestler Sushil Kumar has opened a gyms center of Tihar prison. The wrestler began giving fitness and wrestling classes inside the prison complex. Prison officers informed that about 6-7 inmates have joined his classes, they also mentioned that there are also theory classes in which he advises inmates on the importance of physical fitness. Classes started last week as part of the prison’s extracurricular activity. The activities are supervised by the guards of the prison. One of the prison officers mentioned that Sushil also had a team of other incompetent trainers to help him with the training. Prison officers also claimed that they were not given any gym equipment or any other type of equipment as it is strictly against prison rules. Previously, Kumar trained alone in his cell, which led him to start giving training to some of the interested prisoners. Sushil Kumar is not a hidden name in Indian wrestling. He is a well known figure and has won many medals for India at international level. Kumar has taken Indian wrestling to a huge platform like the Olympics. Prisoners were also intrigued by the idea of a celebrity training them. Kumar does everything to pass his time behind bars.
The 38-year-old wrestler has been charged with the murder of a 23-year-old former wrestling champion, Sagar Dhankarand his friends from Chhatrasal Stadium in May 2021. In the indictment, police found Sushil charged with the murder and claimed that he killed Dhankar because of his ego issues and to maintain his authority among young wrestlers. Cops also said Kumar and his friends beat the junior wrestler with sticks and threw him in the stadium basement. Sagar passed away on May 5 due to severe brain injuries. Kumar was arrested three months after the death of the former junior national wrestling champion.
