He was 25 years old and had done his military service. As an operationally ready National Serviceman, he joined in a high-intensity interval training session at West Coast Park on Wednesday evening.
The goal of this High Intensity Interval Training is to encourage NSmen to lead healthy active lives by providing physical training closer to the community. This NS Fitness Improvement Training (NS FIT) program is offered at 42 locations in Singapore.
The young man had finished warming up at the park and the main exercise was just beginning when he collapsed.
The coaches present tried to revive him. They gave him CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation and used an automated external defibrillator on him and Singapore Civil Defense Force officers continued resuscitation at the scene and in the ambulance that took the NSman to the National University Hospital.
But they couldn’t revive him and he was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m. in hospital. The NSman has not been named.
As a result, all high intensity interval training sessions have been suspended. In one joint statement On Thursday, March 3, the Department of Defense and Health Promotion Council said investigations were ongoing and security practices were being reviewed.
These HPB Quick HIIT sessions will be suspended until Sunday, March 6.
“Across all HPB physical activity programs, on-site safety briefings and wellness checks are conducted prior to the start of each session,” Mindef and HPB said.
The Board of Trustees, the Ministry and the Singapore Armed Forces send their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and assist the family in their bereavement./TISG
