Swimming provides fitness benefits without the stress

It’s never too late to learn to swim, advises Michelle Mason, senior recreation coordinator at New Mexico State University Aquatic Center.

“No matter how old you are, it’s important that you learn to swim,” Mason said. “Once someone learns to swim, there are a lot of fitness benefits, and there isn’t a lot of impact on your body.”

According to a Harvard Medical School article, swimming allows people to achieve their fitness goals with less wear and tear on bones and joints.

“One of the main benefits of swimming is that the water makes you floaty, which relieves your joints,” Dr. I-Min Lee, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, explained in the article. “It can be especially helpful for people who are overweight,” according to Lee.

Mason said that besides swimming there are other exercise programs you can do in the water, but many need a large pool, like the one at the NMSU.

“Water jogging can be done in a small body of water, as long as it’s deep enough,” Mason said. “Water aerobics is a fun way to get into the water, so you don’t have to swim lengths back and forth. We have music and we have great instructors.

“Even if you can’t swim, you can still be in the water,” she added.

NMSU’s AggieFit program offers swimming lessons for people of all ages, including AggieFit members and non-members, throughout the year. For more information, contact AggieFit at 575-646-4045.

The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department also offers swimming lessons and aqua fitness lessons at the Regional Aquatic Center of Las Cruces, 1401 E. Hadley Ave. For more information, call 575-541-2782.

Children and adults can learn to swim when they register for swimming lessons offered at Las Cruces.

Las Cruces has four municipal swimming pools. The peak hours until September 3 are as follows:

Indoor pools:

• Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center, 1401 E. Hadley Ave.

Aqua fitness / lap / exercise: Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 11:30 am, Saturday 8 am to 11:30 am No aqua fitness session on Sunday.

Swimming sessions open: Monday to Friday 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• Frenger Pool, 800 Parkview Drive

Swimming tour: Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Outdoor pools:

• East Mesa Bataan Memorial Pool, 6141 Reynolds Road

Open swimming sessions: Tuesday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Closed Mondays.

• Laabs Pool, 750 W. Picacho Ave.

Open swimming sessions: Tuesday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. Closed Mondays.
