If you want to get fitter, stronger, and healthier, there are three boxes you need to tick when it comes to your workouts, according to a Hollywood trainer.

However, his nutrition and training philosophies apply just as much to the average person as they do to A-listers.

While there is no such thing as a “perfect” fitness regimen, Lygdbäck says there are three things you need to consider when planning your workouts:

  1. Something you love to do
  2. Something your body needs
  3. Something you want to master or improve.

Lygdbäck cites his own training as an example of this system.

“I love lifting weights so this is my number one,” he told Insider. “Pilates and yoga are my number two because I know my body needs it. My number three is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because I want to improve. For someone else it could be tennis , dance, whatever. “

Lygdbäck says it’s important to take a step back and think of your training in terms of these three strands, and do each one weekly. In deciding what each of your three are, however, you have to be honest with yourself about what you really need.

“I don’t like my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while I do it because I get my butt kicked by a guy who rolls me over and chokes me, but I want to improve myself and I love the art form “, says Lygdbäck.

Fitness isn’t just about your body

You don’t need to devote hours to fitness every day to be healthy and fit.

“The most important thing is to find the balance,” said Lygdbäck. “For most people that means trying to be physically active at least three times a week, and never more than six.”

We’re all unique when it comes to movement, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but when someone asks what combination of disciplines would be most effective for getting in shape, Lygdbäck recommends weightlifting and HIIT ( high intensity interval training).

“You can be in great shape and feel great mentally just by doing HIIT and strength training, but there is so much more to life,” Lygdbäck said. “You can get a lot more on a personal level if you educate yourself to try and master a trade. “

Think about what would be mentally fulfilling and give you a sense of accomplishment, and when that’s your goal (rather than the aesthetic) you’ll be more likely to stick with an activity, too.
